How Do I Fix a Leaking Tap?

How do I fix a leaking tap?

A leaking tap can be quite a nuisance. With its slow and rhythmic dripping, you can understand why the Chinese used it as a torture method. Instead of going slowly insane, you can fix the fault using household tools; a Phillips screwdriver, pliers, an adjustable spanner, cloth and a new washer, which is specific to your tap.

It is essential to turn the tap off at the isolation valve before beginning to fix the tap. The isolation valve is usually situated underneath the sink. There will either be a handle, which needs to be turned to stop the water flow or a screw slot, which faces upwards, that needs to be screwed to the side. If your isolation valve does not have either of these or you are unable find the valve, then you must get in contact with a plumber.

Once the isolation valve has been switched off, you will now need to undo the tap handle. There are a variety of methods to do this, which are dependent on the type of tap. It will usually be achieved by unscrewing the small screw on the tap head or manually unscrewing it by hand, or using an adjust spanner.

With the tap head unscrewed, you should ensure the tap head and the screw are placed somewhere carefully. Now with the valve on show, use the spanner to grip the nut section of the valve, where it connects to body of the tap. Then, using the spanner and the cloth, which ensures the tap will not be scratched, attach it to the base of the tap and loosen the valve with the adjustable spanner.

When it is loosened, you can unscrew the valve by hand. A tap with a rubber washer can be eased off simply using a screwdriver. You must replace the washer with a correlating one. Then, reassemble the tap, doing the reverse of these instructions and test the tap to see if it has been fixed.

If all else fails, then you must contact a plumber, so the problem can be addressed professionally.
